Managing Categories

Insites enables you to create and manage product categories. The following sections discuss this in more detail:

  • Adding a category
  • Updating a category
  • Adding Metadata, Open Graph, and Schema to a page
  • Enabling and disabling categories
  • Archiving and restoring categories
  • Deleting categories

Adding a category

To add a category:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Click on CREATE CATEGORY.
  4. Fill out the forms on each of the following tabs:
    • Details
    • Media
    • Gallery
    • Metadata
    • Open Graph
    • Schema
    • Sitemap
  5. Select CREATE CATEGORY.
Note

Product categories can have multiple parent categories and multiple sub-categories.

Details

Use this tab to provide basic information about the category you are creating. The input requirements and descriptions are described in the table below.

Slug Text Field No The URL used to view your category details page.
Category Heading Text Field No The product category page heading.
Category Weighting Text Field No Numeric order of the product category when listed.
Parent Categories Dropdown Field No The parent categories of the product category. If you want the category you are creating to be a top-level category, leave this option empty.
Status Dropdown Field No

The status of the category on the Instance. Options include the following:

  • Enabled
  • Disabled
  • Archived
Category Title Input Field No The title of the category
Short Description Text Field No Short description of the category.
Long Description HTML Field No A detailed description of the category. It can include HTML formatting and more.
Category Image Image Picker No Image of the category on the e-commerce site.

Media

Use this tab to upload media such as files, videos, and music for your product category.

To add media, select one of the clickable fields and choose a file to upload. Alternatively, drag a file from your local machine onto the clickable field. Repeat the process if you need to add more files.

Note

Please take note of the following system behaviors when adding media files for your product category:


  • Use the 'Gallery' tab to upload images as best practice.
  • You can add up to four media files with a maximum size of 10MB each.

Gallery

Use this tab to upload image files for your product category.

To add an image, select one of the clickable fields and choose an image to upload or drag an image onto the clickable field. Repeat the process if you need to add more files.

Note

Please take note of the following system behaviors when adding image files for your product category:


  • You can only upload images on this tab. Use the 'Media' tab to add videos and other media.
  • One field corresponds to an album. You can upload ten images per album.
  • Recommended image dimensions are 1280px by 1280px. The maximum file size is up to 10MB per image.

Metadata

Use this tab to input product category metadata. Field descriptions and requirements are outlined in the table below:

Canonical URL Text Field No Provide a canonical URL to prevent duplicate content issues in SEO in situations where some pages on your site use multiple URLs .
Meta Title Text Field No Title of metadata. A good title has between 40 - 60 characters.
Meta Description Text Field No Description of your metadata. A good meta description has between 150 - 160 characters.

Open Graph

Use this tab to optimize your Open Graph settings. Open Graph is an internet protocol that standardizes metadata usage within a webpage, allowing you to optimize your content to stand out next to other content posted online.

Field descriptions and requirements are outlined in the table below:

Use Meta Title as Open Graph Title Toggle No Enable this option to use the value in the 'Meta Title' field as the Open Graph title. Otherwise, turn the option off if you want to use a different title.
Open Graph Title Text Field No Customized title of your product category's post on your preferred social media platform. The field can only be used if the 'Use Meta Title as Open Graph Title' option is turned off.
Use Meta Description as Open Graph Description Toggle No This tag is a one- or two-sentence snippet that shows up as the preview of the product category post. Enable this option to use your site's meta description as the Open Graph description.
Open Graph Description Text Field No Customized description of your product category's post on your preferred social media platform. The field can only be used if the 'Use Meta Description as Open Graph Description' option is turned off. Write this description carefully, as a good description can mean the difference between getting clicks or not.
Open Graph Image Image Picker No The preview image of your content. The maximum file size is 10MB.
Open Graph URL Text Field No URL (link) that is associated with your content.
Open Graph Site Name Text Field No The name of your site.
Open Graph Type Text Field No Type of content, i.e., website, article, and blog.

Schema

Schema markup is a structured data vocabulary that helps search engines understand parts of your web application on a deeper level. This data enables them to serve better results to end-users.

This tab has a single input field with descriptions and requirements displayed in the table below

Sitemap

The sitemap serves as a roadmap for search engine crawlers, helping them navigate and understand the structure of your pages. Designing your sitemap well improves your web pages' chances of ranking higher and appearing more frequently in search results.

Priority Numerical Field No The priority of this product page's URL relative to other URLs on the site. Valid values range from 0.0 to 1.0. URLs are sorted in descending order.
Order Numerical Field No The order of this product page's URL in relation to other URLs having the same priority value. Similar priority URLs are sorted in ascending order.
Change Frequency Dropdown Field No

An indication provided to search engines about how often this product page will likely change or be updated. Options include the following:

  • Always
  • Hourly
  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Yearly

Note that crawlers treat the values chosen as a 'hint,' not a 'command.' For example, crawlers may crawl pages marked 'hourly' less frequently than that.

Updating a category

To update a category:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Find the category you want to update and select its Edit row action link.
  4. Make your changes. Note that you can use an additional 'Products' tab to manage products assigned to your category when updating a category. Here is the complete list of tabs:

  5. Select SAVE.

Adding Metadata, Open Graph, and Schema to a page

To apply your Metadata, Open Graph, and Schema configurations to the page you prefer, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Find the category whose configurations you want to apply to a page and click on its Edit row action link.
  4. Navigate to one of the following tabs:
    • Metadata
    • Open Graph
    • Schema
  5. Copy the snippet at the bottom of each tab mentioned in the previous step. The snippet would look similar to the following example:

  6. Paste the snippet to the page whose configuration you want to modify.

Enabling and disabling categories

You can disable or enable categories at any time. This functionality proves valuable in scenarios where you need to conceal categories from clients temporarily. For instance, you can disable a newly created category for conducting last-minute checks before making it live.

Enabling categories

To enable categories:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. View disabled categories by toggling the filter at the top of the page to Disabled.
  4. Select the categories you want to enable using their checkboxes. Ticking the topmost checkbox selects all categories.
  5. Select Bulk Actions and choose Enable.
  6. Select APPLY.
  7. Complete the process of enabling previously disabled categories on the confirmation modal.
Note

You may enable individual categories by clicking their Enable row action links.

Disabling categories

To disable categories:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Select the categories you want to disable using their checkboxes. Ticking the topmost checkbox selects all categories.
  4. Select Bulk Actions and choose Disable.
  5. Select APPLY.
  6. Complete the process of disabling categories using the confirmation modal.
Note

You may disable individual categories by clicking their Disable row action links.

Archiving and restoring categories

Archiving categories removes them from view, preventing them from cluttering your table. These can be restored at a later time. Please take note that these actions only archive or restore the category itself. Archiving or restoring categories does not automatically update the products within the categories, as they can be stand-alone products or belong to multiple categories.

Archiving categories

To archive categories:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Select the categories you want to archive using their checkboxes. Ticking the topmost checkbox selects all categories.
  4. Select Bulk Actions and choose Archive.
  5. Select APPLY.
  6. Complete the process of archiving categories using the confirmation modal.

Restoring categories

To restore categories:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. View archived categories by toggling the filter at the top of the page to Archived.
  4. Select the categories you want to restore using their checkboxes. Ticking the topmost checkbox selects all categories.
  5. Select Bulk Actions and choose Restore.
  6. Select APPLY.
  7. Complete the process of restoring categories using the confirmation modal.
Note

You may restore individual categories using their Restore row action links.

Viewing the history logs of a category

History logs are valuable for monitoring events on a category, such as category updates or creation. They offer a detailed record of the category's lifecycle, enabling users to track changes over time and make well-informed decisions during debugging or system updates. To access and review the history logs of a category:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Find the category whose history logs you want to view and select its Edit row action link.
  4. Navigate to the 'History' tab.

You can view the details of a history log by selecting VIEW DETAILS. This view enables you to examine previous data stored in the category and compare it with its current data.

Deleting categories

Deleting a category removes it from the e-commerce database permanently. To delete categories:

  1. Navigate to Ecommerce from the main menu.
  2. Select Categories.
  3. Select the categories you want to delete using their checkboxes. Ticking the topmost checkbox selects all categories.
  4. Select Bulk Actions and choose Delete.
  5. Select APPLY.
  6. Complete the process of deleting categories using the confirmation modal.
Note

You may delete individual categories using their Delete row action links.
